Healthy minds and bodies:

Thinking critically through exploration...

We are learning about our bodies and what is good for them.  We are exploring this topic in many different ways: discussions, science, and mindfulness.
Today we experimented with our lollies to find out how much colouring is inside of them.

We watched as our water started to wash out the many different colours. We had many questions and ideas. Why do different colours taste different?

We discussed what our lollies were made of:  sugar and colours!!

We made a rainbow!!

We talked about how the lollies seemed to melt in the water and thought about where the lollies had gone.  After all the colours came off:  We posed the question would the lollies still taste the same... The answer was yes!!

We made healthy food posters.

Play based learning

Fun in the sun!

Play based learning is something that is being incorporated into the New Entrant classes.  Play has a vital part to play in children's development and is the way in which children first learn how to negotiate, share, turn take and learn many other skills.

Today both all the children in Rooms 1 and 2 had an opportunity to participate in many different learning opportunities from recording their learning outside, to drawing, painting, playing in a band, creating and building the Auckland Sky Tower out of boxes.  There was messy play in which there was opportunity to talk about textures- how things feel and use all our five senses to play.

Happy Holidays from Room 1

Being creative!!
This afternoon we made cards to celebrate the upcoming holidays with our family.

We worked hard to be creative and careful with our writing and drawings.  We want to do our best work because our families mean a lot to all our children.

We made cards to share with our friends.  We even made cards for our teacher.  She was so happy.

We were all very proud of our cards.

Swimming at New Windsor

Fun in the pool!

This week it was our turn for swimming lessons.  We are learning to be safe and responsible in the water.
We are learning lots of new skills such as kicking, blowing bubbles in the water,  and floating like a starfish.
I can see that the children are growing in confidence every day!

The children have been divided into three groups.  The instructors are very patient and work with the children in a kind and inspirational manner.

Education Outside The Classroom Week

A very busy week!!

Rooms one and two worked together on EOTC week.  We had lots of fun learning all sorts of new ideas and different ways of doing things.  We also enjoyed collaborating with our peers and making new friends along the way.

We began our week learning about our native trees that were on the school grounds.  We focused on Pohutukawa, Kauri, Rimu, Kowhai, Te Kouka and our beautiful Silver Fern.  We sketched them, used our gentle hands to touch them.  We were able to see the native trees again in different surroundings on our bush walk at Cornwallis Beach.

Lots of questions and thinking went on this week.  Being outside gives us a different perspective of our world.

Working with our friends from Room 11

Working with our Buddies

We are lucky to have Room 11 as our buddy class!  They are role models for us.
They help us in our learning and we look up to them!
Today they came to share and inspire us to do our best work in our writing lesson.
We are trying really hard to learn how to write our letters correctly.

Together we are amazing!!
